Summary: Feature Request: Systemwide optional horizontal action
button row (Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Trash/Delete) at
top of context menus
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell

DESCRIPTION
Requesting a systemwide optional horizontal icon row at the top (or bottom) of
right-click context menus for core actions (Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Move to
Trash/Delete) across Plasma and Qt/KDE desktop components.
Usability & Rationale:
1. Reduces Mouse Travel: Standard context menus force users to scan long
vertical text lists for universal actions like Copy, Cut, Rename, or Delete.
Placing icon-only buttons in a top row enables fast, muscle-memory access.
2. Space Efficiency: Consolidating core actions into a single horizontal row
saves significant vertical screen space in context menus that are otherwise
bloated by service menus and third-party plugins.
3. Modern Ergonomics: Provides a modern, single-click interface for primary
clipboard, file, and text management actions across the desktop environment.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Right-click any file, desktop space, or UI element in a Plasma/Qt
application.
2. Observe the traditional vertical-only text list layout.
OBSERVED RESULT
Context menus are strictly vertical text lists without options for horizontal
quick-action button rows.
EXPECTED RESULT
An optional setting in System Settings (e.g., under Desktop
Appearance/Behavior) to render a compact, horizontal icon-only action bar (Cut,
Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete) at the top of systemwide context menus.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Fedora Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Edition)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Feature should be strictly opt-in/opt-out via a setting toggle so traditional
users can retain classic vertical text lists.
- The action row could optionally render as a separate, floating secondary
toolbar window positioned immediately above or below the main context menu
(with a slight gap). Treating it as an independent popover layer creates a
clean visual distinction, prevents layout breaking in standard vertical lists,
and gives the UI a sleek, modern aesthetic.
