Bug ID: 527628
Summary: Major game performance degradation after updating to
6.8.1 (DRM color pipeline)
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.1
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: performance
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Video game performance (FPS) in several tested video games heavily degrades
after upgrade to kwin 6.8.1.
Specifically the video games I tested were Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail
and NTE: Neverness to Everness, all running via Proton / Wine.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Update from kwin 6.8.0 to 6.8.1
OR set environment variable KWIN_DRM_USE_COLOR_PIPELINE=0 on 6.8.0
2. Reboot
3. Launch game with Mangohud for FPS Measurement
OBSERVED RESULT
Game performance heavily degraded.
With second monitor active and at 150 % scaling: ~40 FPS in NTE and 30 FPS in
Genshin
With second monitor active and at 100% scaling: ~80 FPS in NTE and 60 in
Genshin (Capped)
With second monitor disabled: ~100 FPS in NTE and 60 in Genshin (Capped)
With KWIN_DRM_USE_COLOR_PIPELINE=1, second monitor active and at 150% scaling:
120 FPS in NTE (Capped) and 60 FPS in Genshin (Capped), performance like it was
before the update
Additionally with vsync off, second monitor on and at 150% scaling, Genshin
reached 60 FPS but felt very stuttery. With 200% scaling on the second monitor
instead of 150% and vsync on, Genshin reached about 38.
All tests were performed with HDR disabled on every display that supports HDR.
Note that I use FSR frame generation in NTE so base frame rate is approximately
half.
I did not measure FPS in Honkai: Star Rail but it felt very choppy so I think
it was also affected.
EXPECTED RESULT
Performance unaffected: 120 FPS in NTE (Capped) and 60 FPS (Capped) in Genshin
Impact
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux, kernel 7.2.11.zen1-1-zen, Wayland session
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0
kwin Version: 6.8.1 (regression) vs kwin 6.8.0 (good)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (Navi 31, 1002:744c)
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
Monitor setup:
DP-2 (primary) : Gigabyte AORUS FO32U2P | [email protected] | Scaling 100%, ICC
profile active
DP-3: LG Ultra HD | 3840x2160@60 | Scaling 150% (also reproduced at 200%)
HDMI-A-1: Philips FTV | 3840x2160@60 | disabled but connected during all the
tests, Scaling 100%
kwin logs mention the following during gameplay:
Key repeat discarded, Wayland compositor doesn't seem to be processing events
fast enough!
Workaround:
Setting the environment variable KWIN_DRM_USE_COLOR_PIPELINE=1 on kwin 6.8.1
restores the 6.8.0 performance.
This regression seems to be a result of commit 01222b41 disabling the color
pipeline in response to bug #525839. However disabling the color pipeline seems
to severely affect performance on my system so this doesn't seem to be a good
solution for every case. I have not noticed any of the color issues on my
system that the original bug report describes so far.
