Manual sorting is applied at the individual item level. The option to sort by name or date is intended to provide a logical initial order for the items, provided that no manual reordering has taken place yet. If neither of these options results in a sensible sequence, it is likely that your scans lack date information or a logical, sequential file-naming convention.
