Screencast demonstrating the problem.
DESCRIPTION
When Word mode rendering (in Appearance -> Complex Text Layout) is enabled,
which is the default, font metrics seems to be not maintained properly. This
results in rendered text shifting when the user moves the cursor or selects
fragments of text. The shift accumulates more towards the right end of the
longer lines of text and in some cases reaches the width of a single character.
The shift seems dependent on the text coloring and resets when the coloring
changes.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. In Konsole, open a text editor or another TUI application, such as Midnight
Commander or mcedit.
2. Try moving the cursor around the text. Preferably, choose a text file or an
application with long lines of text.
3. Try selecting lines of text.
4. Observe the rendered text around the cursor and text selection.
OBSERVED RESULT
The affected text shifts around the cursor and text selection. It is clearly
misaligned with text above and below the affected line. Around the cursor,
visible gaps between characters are introduced, which sometimes are as wide as
a whole character. This may appear as if there is an extra space character.
EXPECTED RESULT
Cursor and selection should not affect text metrics.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-12700K
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.1 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor 1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
Graphics Processor 2: Intel® UHD Graphics 770
Manufacturer: ASUS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This reproduces with various fonts, although in different ways. For example,
with Hack, DejaVu Sans Mono or DM Mono the selected text appears wider than
normal (i.e. the text right of the selection is moved further right) and with
Ubuntu Mono or Ubuntu Sans Mono the selected text appears narrower than normal
(i.e. the text right of the selection is moved to the left) .
This also reproduces in Yakuake.
I've recorded a screencast that demonstrates the problem. This is mcedit with
the Hack font.
