There are several ways around that: 1) Use a Color Clip and set the color to transparent 2) Use a Title Clip without any text You can change the duration of each of those clips to anything you want in the bin and create copies for different durations. I also suggest to save those clips to the Library so that you can use them in multiple projects. The resizing bit is a bit more tricky because with this workaround you need to use the Ripple tool in Overwrite mode, so you need to switch back and forth between the Select tool in Normal mode and Ripple / Overwrite.
