The icons-only task manager is designed to implement a macOS "Dock" paradigm in
which the icons are always sorted per user preference. If you want them to be
able to sort automatically like the regular task manager, you can actually just
move the regular task manager to a screen edge and resize it such that all you
can see is the icons. This only works if it's vertical of course, but that's a
small price to pay (and the icons-only style makes more sense vertically anyway
since it's more compact).
