I just noticed that also Thunderbird shows the same behaviour. If I remember
well Thunderbird, Firefox are GTK applications but I could not reproduce the
same behaviour (or lack thereof) in other GTK applications like gEdit. I
therefore close this issue and report it elsewhere.
