Looks like it works in the nightly build. I assumed I needed to go into the menu to sort because the clips came in unsorted and that this bug was related to the menu selection process. Now I see what you mean about date sorting not working at all. Ironically, now I'll just be sorting by clicking the bar above the project clip list instead of going into the menu.
