Spot on! Yes, setting "Keep Window Thumbnails" option to "Always" solves it. Logged out twice without problems after that. Great you figured this out! I now remember that I had this setting for a long time because it made the background-colors of the icons in the taskbar more to my liking (lighter). But IIRC this was no longer necessary when a new Plasma version came out and so I set that option back to "Never" - after all, you get a warning when setting it to "Always". So it may indeed be that the switch to "Never" coincided with that certain Plasma version with which the problem seemingly began. Nate, would you consider this a Plasma bug?
