Here is a screenshot with the second panel:

my opinion is that the second panel is not a good idea, at least not as shown
in the screenshot. reasons:

* the icons are not immediately obvious in function, but there is no room for
text
* they do not line up with the list items which makes the whole dialog look
messy and probably puts requires cognitive load to process visually
* they will not be used frequently, but are always shown

if filtering is a must (i’m not personally convinced it is, but ok :) then i
would suggest perhaps putting them in the bottom drawer that expands when
clicked on.

they could appear there as a horizontal row of icons which can be selected?

I wanted to have this panel as an option, so you can disable it when you want. There are still some people who miss the second panel from the old applet, they want to filter their connections, I don't know why, because for me it's useless, but I wanted to make everyone happy :). But we planned more then use this panel just for filtering. We can display some indicator for each connection type, so you instantly know you are connected to some wireless/wired connection or some kind of connection is unreachable and in this case when you click on it, we would display some information why you don't see any connection (wifi is disabled etc.). Right now I'm just playing with it, it's not pushed to git and any opinions are welcome.
