I have actually no clue :)
I just remembered reading about that KWin plugin and remember thinking that it 
was pretty smart to get the screen image "at the source" so to speak.

It might very well be an extremly stupid thing to do for what I know, lets CC 
the KWin developers ;-)

Seems KDEnlive is also using recordmydesktop under the hood for screencapture.
But that was in 2009, so better options might exist today.
