You're mistaken apples for oranges.
Since nobody could help regarding the sddm issue on the Ubuntu users
mailing list, I recommended to join the Kubuntu and/or kde-linux
mailing list.
If there is a conflict between Ubuntu packages from the official
Ubuntu repositories, you need to report this to the Ubuntu bug tracker
or send a request to the Ubuntu or Kubuntu mailing list.
I understand that not each user is able to decide, if something is
related to an issue and to what mailing list it belongs.
In this case the issue, that there seems to be no way to select the
desired session by sddm, while it's config seemingly is ok and the
required desktop files are installed, too [1], is not related to the
conflicting packages.

I did as you suggested as to the other lists. I also changed from sddm
to the other program following your instructions. I get as far as the
name after Grub. Then it goes blank and no further. Will not boot any
further. This lasr time I started it has been blank for 45 minutes. Can
I get back to sddm,
