This has fixed some of the problems I am seeing. I can now log in as root. I can set component security, maybe? I can't list however, so I can't tell if what I am doing is really working or not.

Update svc-crypto-base64, svc-crypto-des, svc-cache-excalibur, all changes in system.xconf. I haven't run it, but it should fix the problem you are seeing, caught CVS in the midst of some changes.
