It is my honor to formally introduce to the group the
newest edition of app-workflow and Red Keel.

There are several people that had played around with
app-workflow (first version) that used OSWorkflow as
the workflow engine. This version was based heavily
on Sequence and had many problems.

After much work in trying to get that version to work,
I decided to start completely over and write a
workflow engine (Red Workflow) that could make some
assumptions based on the workings of Keel.
App-workflow now has Red Workflow integrated and no
longer depends on Sequence any more.

One other big difference is how you generate the XML
files that configure the workflow engine. Previously,
you had to hand code XML files (this was riddled with
bugs and hair loss from pulling it out!). It migrated
to using JProcessEditor, but there were serious bugs
in the conversion process from the XPDL standard
(workflow standard) and the OSWorkflow configuration
XML.

>From all of this emerged Red Keel (whose slogan
currently is "It gives your apps wings"). Red Keel is
actually a suite of tools (all plug ins for Eclipse)
that are in the works. Red Wave (Workflow Application
Visual Environment) is the first of tools in Red Keel.
Red Wave is a graphical tool for drawing and editing
workflows for app-workflow.

There is some documentation on how to use these two
tools together in the docs directory of project
RedWorkflowEditor (now known as Red Wave). There will
be wiki pages set up very shortly for all of this. I
know a couple commercial applications being built
right now with these tools and the first is going live
within the week.

If you are not an Eclipse kind of developer, you have
two options. Hand code the XML (that is almost as
crazy as not using Eclipse :) ) or you can use
JProcessEditor.

The next plug in that is being worked on is Rembrandt,
a GUI page builder for Keel. This is basically a drag
and drop Prompt Model builder. Integrated with it
will be REDiquette. This is a package that is in
testing for automatic data validation. These will
probably be integrated with Keel 2.1.

Look for more information soon on a wiki page near
you!
