Ryan, I'm too "young" as a Lua user to give any advice but it seems we followed the same path.
I started in fact by installing Lua and LuaRocks through the 'kepler-install-1.1.1-2' script like you did. When I later noticed their was a newer version of LuaRocks, I just installed the newer one over the older one. This did not go as smoothly as I hoped because the path to the 'rocks_servers' had changed in config.lua under $HOME/etc/luarocks and was not updated. It must now be set to http://luarocks.org/repositories/rocks to have it point to the new repository. Moreover the new LuaRocks seems to use an additional 'rock_manifest' file the older one didn't have which had me reinstall all my rocks. Plus the first "general" manifest file in the rocks folder was missing (there's something about this on the list but I can't find the message) so I copied the older one, cleaned it up and sort of "bootstrapped" the new rocks installation from it. I hope I'm wrong and that there is some easier means of getting the installation of the new LuaRocks to work out of the box. I also hope someone can give you better information.
