Actually, there are two reasons.  First, it fits in with the project naming
scheme--the computer system here is called "Athena," the user database is
called "Moira," etc.  As for the actual selection of name: Kerberos's
original design goals were Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting;
these are its three heads.
