Public bug reported:
I am running Linux Mint 20 because Linux Mint 19.3 with Kernels 5.4.0-40
and 4.15.0-109 would cause a freeze when resuming from suspend. Kernel
5.0.0-32 would resume from suspend perfectly with the following
behaviour: if screen was black a quick press of the space key would give
me my desktop but the mouse pointer would not move for a few seconds
until the wireless or ethernet notification came up, at which point the
pointer would move with the touchpad input and wi-fi or ethernet would
connect and I would be on my way. When it freezes the networking
notification never appears and I am stuck with either a black screen or
desktop with frozen mouse pointer. No keyboard inputs are accepted but
my volume hard buttons react so something is still alive on my laptop. A
hard shutdown with the power button is required to recover. The only
difference between failure and success is the different kernels, all
graphics, wi-fi and sound drivers are the same. The upgrade to Linux
Mint 20 did not help because it uses the 5.4.0-40 kernel. It appears the
hang is after the graphics come up but there appears to be a problem
with the hand-off to the mouse or network drivers during resume. I am
stuck on 5.0.0-32 even though it is end of life. Here is my system
report. Network wi-fi drivers b43-pci-bridge and wl both fail with 5.4
and 4.15 and both work with 5.0 so I believe it is not the drivers.
