Have done some thinking about this in the past - one initial idea mightbe to add in encryption support into the vn(4) device - and possibly make this generic some how.. also - OpenBSD has encrypted VN's ..
not sure if this would qualify for a GsoC project without making it generic though.. anyhow. good luck!
