I am also seeing something that looks like poor IO performance or scheduling. Switching workspaces on my desktops takes several seconds. I don't currently see anything this bad on the 2.6.33 kernel. I am running ext3 with journal_data on top of luks encryption on top of raid 1 with barriers.
