how to kernel debugging

hi to all,
i am new to kernel .can any one tell me about document for debugging kernel.
is any patch is require for it i.e kdb kgdb?
i am using 2.6.21 kernel i have compiled this kernel with DEBUG_KERNEL=y
option anything else is require to enable?
how can i debug my kernel ?
