Watch out for Ubuntu, they have some weird patches on top of GTK that they use with Unity. This may explain some of the weirdness under Unity. It's not a WM thing though, they've actually patched GTK. It may also be related to a difference in GTK version, or a setting respected by GTK.
The WM itself has no knowledge of menus though.
