[sound of planting face in hand] D'oh! Yes, I was thinking solder masks and not the paste tool. Well, one sure way to do this is to edit the *SoldP_Cmp.pho (and similar) file and mod the appertures. E.g., if the original apperture for an 0804 was D23 and it was listed as %ADD23R,0.055000X0.035000*% (1.4 mm x 0.9 mm) in the Gerber, changing it to 1 mm x 0.5 mm would be %ADD23R,0.040000X0.020000*%, more or less.
