Beg pardon :).   I was basing this on my own personal experience and 
what an American engineer told me just recently.   I should add that 
I've yet to meet a US engineer that didn't find the continued use of 
traditional units in their industry annoying or embarrassing, and NASA 
of course use metric.   So scratch "US" from my list.
