What M$ has done is abuse (IMO) the flexibility of XML to disguise its "IP."
Their spec is essentially a load (thousands of pages) of tags of the form
<TabIndentInPageFooterIsSameAsExcel95WithExtensions3And4And5And6> No
definition, just references to an illegal-to-reverse-engineer implementation,
so no one can implement their spec.

Over 6000 pages of it.

XML is not inherently bad, in fact it's quite good. But some folks can write
bad code in any language.
Donald.

I've read something saying they were putting forward a semi-competing XML
extension standard of some kind, but that is the extent of my familiarity with
the topic.

I used XML for the first time when I staerted doing serious Linux development a
few years ago (from MS and previously VMS).  At first, I was against it due
to its verbosity and textual-basis.  I've come to appreciate it for those
various reasons.

I'm not wed to the idea or even an evangelical on the topic.  I just threw it
out there as an idea worthy of discussion.

Greg

Is XML a viable avenue to pursue because of all the trouble Microsoft is
getting in for using XML as a basis for Word?

Example:

Terms: Microsoft, XML, Lawsuit
