The docs should be in the main distro and should be installed in 
/usr/local/kicad/docs

(You may have problems with your reader... I recall one distro install I
useddid not set up the pdf reader as expected. Have a peek in your home
folder for .kicad_common and see what reader it is expecting to find.)


If they are not there you can get the main binary package here, and
extract the doc directory
