Here are the steps I follow:

1. Open the library editor.
2. Select the desired library
3. If editing a part, select the desired part number
4. Open (or create) the desired library for saving the part.
5. Edit the part
6. Remember, the field labeled "Value" is the Part Number that the new
part will be saved under. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but that's
the way it works.
7. Save the part to the library.
8. Save the library.

Some gotchas to watch out for. When looking up part numbers, the schematic
editor will use the first matching number encountered, thus if you have
different parts using the value R for example, the order of precedence of
your libraries within the project template with determine which R gets used.
Confused? So was I . for a looooonggg time. <G>

Subject: [kicad-users] Library problems

Hi I'm a fairly experienced pcb designer but am new to kicad and have been
struggling to create parts with the library editor. I want to use parts from
existing librarys as a template to create new parts. The only problem is I
can't seem to change the name of the part which is getting really annoying.

I go into library editor and select a library. Then i choose a part from
this library and edit it and then i open the new library to save it in and
am forced to save it with the same name. Why is there no option to change
the name?!

I'm wondering if my copy of kicad has a bug. I can't find an option to
change the part name. In library editor every icon to the right of zoom auto
is greyed out.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or if I should be looking
for another copy of kicad. My build is 20090216 and i only started using it
a week ago so its not as if i have an ancient copy.
