I had the same problem at the beginning, when i started to write my own library. So i wrote a manual about editing symbols (i did not yet something big with modules). You will find my manual about the symbol editor at the attachment as "SymboleFuerKiCad318082009-RevC-EN.pdf". You also will find this file at the repository of the KiCAD users Mailing list, wehere are you member. There you will find the original of this manual, which i wrote in german and translated it to englisch, too. The symbol library is also in this repository, and is named SymbolsSimilarEN60617+oldDIN617-RevB-en.lib . I now, there are many ways to create a new symbol from scrap, but this will be a little bit confusing sometimes.
