Sadly, specially in the Philippines, it's always about what "paper" you are holding... and not what you know of the job in question. Added to that also is from what school you came from. Although we have to admit, a lot of expensive, ivy-leaguish schools do produce fitting candidates, but oftentimes, those from lesser-known institutions produce qualified candidates too. But a lot of companies rarely see that fact. They start with "Where did you graduate?". Then when the candidate did not come from their preferred academe, they shrug the applicant off :)... i should know.. I'm a victim of this discrimination too :)).
Hmmm.. so true. If you ask me, intelligence (or the lack of it) isn't confined to where you attend college. Sa Xavier, daghan gihapon mga polpol na CompSci graduates ug mga polpol na CompSci teachers (I can only speak for my alma mater so mao ra akong ma-example, and yes, I think I do have the right to argue on that considering that students practically pay P20k+ per semester in XU). Speaking of which, I would have it that XU invests more on its manpower than on equipment and the like. What's the use of blanketing the campus with Wi-fi access or buying the latest brand-name servers if you can't even keep or hire smart people to teach the students? Besides, all the students probably do with the Wifi access is to watch YouTube and log in to Friendster. Hahaha. -- Matt Arnilo S.
