Ubuntu and derivatives (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, et al) follow a Mac-style mantra in terms of user login wherein root is not allowed to login interactively (GUI).
In regular Ubuntu fashion, you can enable/allow root to login interactively by going to System Preferences then in Login section, you specify to allow root to login. To change root's password to a unique password other than your password (created during the installation process) just type: # sudo passwd root Changing password for root. New Password: (type the new password) Reenter New Password: (retype new password) Password changed. Then you can logoff and login as root in the GUI. Or for a convenient and preferred way, follow Matt's and other's suggestion to use "sudo <command>" syntax. I observed that once you invoke "sudo" once successfully, you will not be prompted with the root password throughout your login session anymore. Today i tried setting up Kubuntu 6.06 in VMware. So far there are no problems in the installation. My only problem is how to set up the password for root since in the installation, I was not asked to give the root password, only a regular unpriviliged user. Any ideas?
