there are many neat japanese tutorials out there..

But if you have cash to spend, it's better to buy some of those "Kiso" books.
These are the books actually used in the AOTS program of the Japan.
AOTS is short for Associaiton for Overseas Technical Scholarship.

Certain companies in the philippines provide in-house Japanese Literacy training
for the JLPT(Jap Language Proficiency Test). And  these companies make use
of these books from the AOTS.
But if you're cautious about spending alot of money,
you can just browse around for tutorials... There are lots of hiragana, katakana and even kanji tutorials floating around in the web. It would help, if you're from a chinese school (but not really a necessity).
Stephan is right about anime, I know quite a few people who
had no formal japanese training and who can fairly read and talk japanese
just from reading manga(japanese anime comics) and watching anime movies.
