Hello Edmond,
Having a telnet session over Linux towards a Windows workstation is pretty
straightforward. However, it will require you to enable some services in your
Windows workstation in order for this to work. I am assuming you are using
Windows XP either SP1 or SP2?
To enable Telnet on Windows XP (this run Windows Telnet), you will need to
open up port 23 in the Windows Firewall and enable the Telnet Service in
Administrative Tools. Should you want to support Unix services on your Windows
box, it will be prudent to add/install Windows Services for Unix 3.5. If I'm
not mistaken this can be added as a Windows component.
Windows Services for Unix 3.5 provides on top of Windows a set of Unix
services like:
- NFS server
- NIS server
- Mapper (portmapper ??)
- PCNFS Server
- Telnet Server (the Unix variant)
- Password Synchronization
- Remote Shell (RSH)
- Services for Unix Administration tools
- Interix daemons
SSH is a much more secure option than using Telnet though. There are
Windows-based SSH servers out there. freeSSHd ( http://www.freesshd.com/) is
an example. OpenSSH can be installed on top of Windows however, this will be
running via Cygwin. Checkout OpenSSH for Windows at
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/information/

Linux Gurus,
Does anybody knows how to telnet from linux to a windows workstation?
I am planning to put a cellphone from a Windows workstation connected by a
serial cable
When nagios alarms, i want to be able to send a telnet message from nagios
to a windows workstation to send the alert to a list of cellphones, using a SMS
sender by windows.
i want to do it using SMS sender of windows because it has an easier cli
command where i can use batch files to send to specific cellphones for
different errors in nagios.
but if you have any other suggestions, i will be more than willing to test.
i know that nagios has sms messaging capability but still have not tested
it yet.
Thanks in advance.
