hey brent, as he said, in his earlier post and this one On Saturday 19 July 2008 18:45:16 Kristopher Julius Alcordo wrote: > mag setup raman ko ug forums.. hehe.. na point na sa NS po? :)
he just wants to set up forums for this ML. however, i think that what he was asking for was rather too broad. he suggested pointing the whole domain at his server. I'd suggest pointing a subdomain. it's unfortunate that, e.g., forums.cdo.linux.org.ph is a bit long, but it would be more flexible (in terms of other services later) than pointing cdo.linux.org.ph to him. i'm not sure that it's worth the trouble to actually do the DNS change (do you administer the cdo.linux.org.ph subdomain? or do we need to bother jijo or ian about that?). Possibly simpler would be to just do an http redirect for forums.* to his server. original post by Mr Alcordo is below. personally, i think forums are a mistake unless forum posts are also mirrored to the list. but that's only because i never visit forums. mailing lists give me one place to see everything i'm interested in. i have to remember to visit forums, and generally, i'm just not going to do that. i've set up RSS readers to read forums for me, but i tend to give up on that too, after a while. if others here want to have web based forums, that's fine too, I guess. although whether you (list owner) would be OK with a forum weakening the list by having posts go there instead, is up to you to decide :-). I don't know what the majority feeling on the list might be, but I'd say that strengthening the group is more important than increasing traffic on the list. so there is probably going to be useful value to having that site. Particularly if the site has something similar to jijo's techscene.free.net.ph, which is a feed aggregator that pulls blogposts from members of PLUG and various filipino oriented free software groups. while i don't much like forum style websites, having one (particularly if, at minimum, mailing list posts are gatewayed into it, and optionally forum posts are gatewayed to the ML) allows related forums (e.g., urios, about which there was some discussion earlier) to link to the website (which will, presumably, have better organization and perhaps editing, than raw mailing list archives [which urios could also link to, but which are not very friendly to browse around in]).
