Visiting RI Muslim students should explain country's democracy to Americans NEW YORK, U.S.A. (Antara): Students of Indonesia's Islamic schools (pesantrens), who are visiting the United States, are expected to explain their country's democracy and Islamic values to Americans, Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. Soemadi Brotodiningrat said in Washington DC on Thursday. "The students should be able to explain to the Americans the success of the recent legislative and presidential elections, in addition to the practice of democracy, which is in line with Islamic values in Indonesia," Soemadi said when receiving some 38 Muslim students at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC. He noted that the visit of the Indonesian Muslim students to the country was important for U.S.-Indonesian relations. "Thus, you should make the American people aware that Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country, can peacefully practice the processes of democracy," the envoy told them. The 38 students and six teachers from a number of Islamic schools in Indonesia are attending a civic education and youth leadership development program organized by Legacy International with the support of the U.S. State Department. Soemadi expressed the hope that after the program the students would play major roles in developing their nation. Since last June, the students have visited various places in the U.S. to hold discussions with American students. They are slated to return to Indonesia this week. (*) ------------------------ Yahoo!
