I'd like to add my voice to the 'yes, definitely you want to switch'. I've had a large project going that is eventually migrating from exactly that old stinky calendar widget to the jQuery UI calendar widget -- much more please to use from the user and developer ends. The only issue we've had is the old stinky widget support time and date setting so needed to handle time inputs separately. Galen, it can be used inline and I suspect would work how you're thinking.
