Hi Elaine, I understand that in your situation. For the benefit of
others, the better way to set lost status is from the record Details
page by selecting the Items tab from those at left.

I will change it back, because it's necessary for our collection. I
suppose the right answer is to correct the framework in the faulty

We've got material shelved all over an old building and I don't want
the staff to spend a lot of time looking for something that's 'lost'.
Precisely because we have so many different shelving locations (and
we've been shifting material as the building is rehabbed) we're not
willing to abandon these items altogether, they usually do turn up
eventually. Lost status has nothing to do with our borrowers. We
rarely circulate material.
