Arizona Indy Media:Tucson:
Free Speech, in a Pig's Eye

by Wayne Sumstine

Tucson, Nov 6 (NY Transfer)--Imagine the unlikely but
entirely possible scenario of a group of a few hundred
Evangelical Christian Republicans of all ages walking
peacefully down the sidewalk the day after the election,
carrying banners praising President Bush, and generally
celebrating the election results. The sidewalk is quite
crowded with their throng, and a small handful of the
more excited ones venture off the curb. Police monitors
warn these few to get back onto the sidewalk.

Then the police start firing small paintball-style bullets
filled with CS gas directly into the crowd at close range,
hitting retreating people in the back. This isn't a dispersal
action, as the march is then allowed to peacefully continue
on. It is done with the obvious purpose of injuring those
who strayed off the curb, and to intimidate the rest of the
group, and it succeeds in doing just that. Those who
ventured into the street are roughed up and arrested. Then
imagine that the assistant chief of police tells the media
that with regard to the marchers, there were "No instances
of violence or property damage." The entire event was
peaceful from start to finish.

Well, substitute your celebrating Evangelical Christian
Republicans for a group of "left wing" protesters from
such subversive organizations as the National Lawyers
Guild and Food Not Bombs, and you have by all
reasonable accounts what happened in Tucson, AZ this
past Thursday, November 4, 2004.

Perhaps you might understand why a growing number of
people all over the country believe their free speech and
your free speech is in a pig's eye..

Police fire pepperball projectiles
during Tucson protest

Tucson Police use violence
against marchers:

author: Emrys, Arizona Indymedia

During a post-election protest in Tucson, Arizona, police
fired pepperball projectiles of the kind that recently killed
a Boston area student at a group of non-violent
demonstrators. (The following link contains photos the
event:
 http://arizona.indymedia.org/news/2004/11/22767.php).

Tucson Police reacted with unwarranted violence against
protestors in Tucson for committing the crime of walking
in the street. About 200 people joined the "Don't just
vote, take action" march organized by several activist
groups in Tucson, spearheaded by the National Lawyers
Guild.

Police arrested a total of 6 people during the march, two
of whom were given felony charges of resisting arrest.
Police shot marchers with pepper bullets - small paint
ball style bullets filled with CS gas. They discharged
one pepper spray canister into the crowd at the
beginning of the march.

Officer P. Tosca was the one who fired the pepper bullets,
giving one marcher two large welts on her back.

Assistant police chief Roberto Villaseor told Arizona
Indymedia that "A lot of people made it clear that they
probably wanted to make more symbolic gestures than
just chanting or just holding up signs." But he said there
were no instances of violence or property damage. In
fact, no one committed any violent acts during the march
what-so-ever. Villaseor said TPD's main concern was
the safety of cars in the street - he didn't want any drivers
to have to make "evasive maneuvers" to avoid a protestor.

The march congregated on a street corner in front of
Tucson's federal building. People lined the side of the
road and held a variety of signs while others took turns
speaking through a portable PA system.

A wide array of comments were made, from "we need
to work within the system and change it," to "Fuck this
shit! Fuck this police state!"

The Dry River Collective has called for an anti-police
protest in front of the Tucson Police Department station,
270 S. Stone at 4:00 pm on Thursday, November 4.
