Bush, according to a Chilean police report. A police special force is investigating the incident that caused several damages in the financial building and panic among citizens of the area. It is thought that the incident is part of protests against the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC meeting in Chile and the participation of President Bush. Student protestors clashed with Chilean police Wednesday during demonstrations leading to the weekend meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) group, according to reports. Thousands of demonstrators converged on the Chilean capital earlier this week to protest the APEC meeting that will host world leaders such as US President George W. Bush. Earlier, angry protesters opposed to the summit and US President George W. Bush's upcoming attendance, battled police for hours, hurling rocks at officers who responded with tear gas and water cannon blasts. After being repulsed, the crowd of protesters - mostly university students- fled but managed to regroup, shutting down traffic and yelling, "Get out of here, Bush," and "We don't want to be an American colony." Bush is to meet with other APEC leaders, including Chinese Prime Minister Hu Jintao, and Japanese President Junichiro Koizumi, at the summit this weekend. Activists had filed a criminal complaint against Bush in court, claiming that he and other US officials were guilty of war crimes in Iraq. "It is not possible that our president is going to meet this criminal Bush and shake his hand in an official state visit," said Fernando Ortiz, a top official in the Humanist Party and the leftist Podemos political alliance as well as one of the activists behind the complaint against Bush. "Lagos is going to betray the Chilean people," he added. The largest protest is scheduled for tomorrow, with organizers hoping to bring tens of thousands of people out on the streets of Santiago. ========================================= Search the NYTr Archives at: http://olm.blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ To subscribe or unsubscribe or change your settings via the web, visit: http://olm.blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr NY Transfer News Collective A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ============================================== [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
