>Dear Friends,
>Below is the year 2000 plan of action to free Leonard Peltier. You will see
>that we now have the exact date for Leonard's Parole Review Hearing, which
>is June 12. Not listed in the plan of action is the ongoing telephone
>campaign which will continue through out the year, and future delegations we
>plan to bring to DC and to visit Leonard. Some of the items listed have
>already been sent out on the list, however there are quite a few "NEW" ones
>that have not. Please let us know if you are planning anything in your area
>that should be listed. If possible, plan vigils in your area for the day
>before the parole hearing and invite your local media to attend. Also, plan
>now to either be in DC or in San Francisco in October if Leonard is not out
>yet. All are welcome to plan solidarity events in their areas for June 26th
>and July 4th if you cannot attend at the national locations planned. Again,
>if you plan something in your area, let us know and we will list it and help
>publicize it. Thank you and let us know if you have any feed back.

>PAROLE REVIEW HEARING
>Leonard Peltier has a parole review hearing scheduled for this June 12. He
>is long overdue for release through parole, and it is one of his only
>remaining options for freedom. It is very important that we be prepared to
>pressure the Parole Commission to release him this June. Indirectly, we can
>use the media, the President, Janet Reno, and Congress to pressure the
>commission. Directly, we can collect letters from churches, unions, human
>rights organizations, the general public, etc. and send them to the parole
>commission through the LPDC. Please use the LPDCs enclosed sample letters
>and phone banking instructions to base your communications on. The parole
>commission has been extremely hostile toward Leonard, so we must bring
>enough pressure from responsible human rights organizations, the public,
>government officials, media, etc. to ensure that this time they follow their
>own guidelines and let him go. Plan peaceful media events such as vigils
>the night before the hearing.
>
>PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNMAKE PELTIER AN ISSUE
>While presidential candidates tour the US campaigning, be sure to use the
>opportunity to bring attention to the case of Leonard Peltier. During
>public meetings ask direct questions about the candidates positions on the
>Peltier case. For example, you could pose a question by saying, Mr.
>Bradley. . .Amnesty International, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jesse Jackson,
>and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center are declaring Native American,
>Leonard Peltier to be a political prisoner who should be immediately and
>unconditionally released. Once elected, would you side with these respected
>humanitarians and grant clemency to Leonard Peltier? If the meetings are
>closed to the public, gather outside with signs stating, for example, Gore
>wont get in unless Peltier comes out!
>
>COUNTER FBI ATTACKS IN THE MEDIA-LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
>Many of you have probably encountered the FBIs recent attempt to counter
>efforts to gain executive clemency for Native American, Leonard Peltier.
>They have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on newspaper and radio
>ads, wrought with misinformation, and outright lies in an attempt to mold
>public opinion before our grass roots campaign can bring them the truth.
>They are also submitting a dear editor form letter to numerous papers. In
>the midst of new revelations about the FBIs shameless efforts to cover up
>important details regarding the Waco catastrophe, it is no wonder that they
>are now feeling so threatened as to launch a costly campaign to cover their
>tracks in regard to Leonard Peltiers case as well.
>
>In the advertisements, the FBI claim that they are attempting to spread the
>facts of the Peltier case while dispelling the inaccuracies, Mr. Peltiers
>supporters have disseminated. Supporters such as Amnesty International, the
>late Mother Theresa, and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human
>Rights to name a few. Of course the ads did not contain contested facts or
>attempts to challenge Leonards claims. Instead, they were based on brutal
>insults and emotional, unfounded, and undocumented claims.
>
>Help get the facts of the Peltier case out. If your paper has printed
>slanderous letters to the editor about the Peltier case be sure to
>immediately respond with a letter to the editor of your own. Call the paper
>and let them know that you are outraged that they have printed such
>undocumented misinformation and ask them to print your letter. If your
>paper has not printed a slanderous letter, send a strong letter to the
>editor about Leonards case to them before the FBI does. Hook it in to the
>holidays or other related current issues that your paper is interested in.
>Submit a letter no longer than 1000 words in double spaced format. Attached
>are some points and rebuttals you can include in your letters. Thank you.
>
>SPRING AWARENESS TOUR
>Global Exchange, a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to raising
>awareness and people to people ties around the world, is sponsoring an
>awareness campaign to help build support and knowledge around the Leonard
>Peltier case during this critical time in the fight for his release. Jean
>Day, a spokesperson for the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee and life long
>advocate for Native rights, is currently available to visit your community,
>school, church, or union to speak about the Peltier case and the realities
>on Pine Ridge during the era from which Leonards case stems. She will speak
>about the repressive conditions the Native people of the Pine Ridge
>Reservation endured during the Reign of Terror and of the wrongful
>incarceration of Leonard Peltier. She will also discuss the facts
>surrounding the case, long withheld from the public, which support Leonards
>innocence.
>
>Jean Day has a personal connection to the case of Leonard Peltier. She was
>an active member of the American Indian Movement during the Reign of
> Terror and saw many of her friends and family killed, disappeared,
>threatened and harassed during what some consider to be the largest headhunt
>of political leaders and most serious case of repression against Native
>Americans in modern decades. Though silenced in the past due to fear of the
>FBI following through with its threats to her and her family, Jean is now
>prepared to speak out and share the truth about the mistreatment she and
>many others have had to live with for so long. She is an advocate for the
>immediate release of Leonard Peltier and can provide a current analysis of
>the case. As a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Jean now works as a Guardian
>at Litum for Native American children. She also has experience working in
>legislative planning and with youth in correctional facilities as a
>counselor. She is a certified Lay Advocate and has jurisdiction in Tribal
>Courts. Jean holds a BS in Sociology and an MS in Human Development and
>Community Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
>
>PROGRAM: We envision a typical program to be a talk by Jean followed by a
>question and answer session. Some groups may wish to host a reception
>before or after the event. Other engagements such as local radio shows,
>media interviews, fundraising events for the LPDC, and small group
>discussions are also a welcome addition prior to a larger program. If
>desired, we can also provide short video clips to help with case background.
>It may also help to show a video on the case to generate interest and
>support some time before the speaking engagement. Contact the LPDC to find
>out how to get Incident at Oglala by Robert Redford if interested.
>
>WE ARE ASKING HOSTS TO:
>*Provide suitable venue arrangements (location and equipment for the event).
>*Provide hospitality for our speaker, including food, lodging (home stay is
>fine)
>*Provide transportation to and from the airport and other events.
>*Publicize events to your local media and within your community. Global
>Exchange can assist
> with this.
>
>WE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
>*Travel arrangements and expenses
>*Providing literature and related materials on the case
>*Partial responsibility for publicity
>To book an event please call Global Exchange; contact Shannon Wolfe in the
>Speakers Bureau via phone at extension 352 or email:
>[EMAIL PROTECTED]
>FUNDING: We are requesting a $1000 honorarium for college campus speaking
>engagements. (If such funds are not available, this amount can be negotiated
>depending on travel cost). We understand that some groups can provide more
>support than others can. It is our experience that seeking co-sponsorship
>amongst other departments and organizations helps to share cost and host
>responsibilities as well as generates a larger audience for the event.
>
>JUNE 26 AND 27-ANNIVERSARY OF OGLALA SHOOT OUT HONORING FOR OGLALA PEOPLE
>June 26, 2000 will mark 25 years since the shoot-out at Oglala occurred in
>1975. After the shoot out ended, the people at Oglala underwent a period of
>heightened violence, fear, and intimidation by the FBI. People were
>threatened and intimidated, houses were illegally searched and ransacked,
>and the murders and beatings continued through the months that followed.
>The people at Oglala took care of us, they protected us, and they risked
>their lives for us over and over, said Jean Day who lived on the Jumping
>Bull property where the shoot out occurred. For the 25th anniversary of the
>shoot out, Leonard Peltier, Jean Day, Nilak Butler, David Chief and others
>will honor the people of Oglala on the 26 and 27 of June. A Giveaway and
>ceremonies for Anna Mae Aquash, Joe Stuntz, and agents Coler and Williams
>will be held at Oglala. All are welcome to attend. Details will be
>announced as they develop.
>
>JULY 4, 2000CALL TO YOUTH
>A punk/hip hop benefit show will be held at Fort Leavenworth (near
>Leavenworth prison where Leonard Peltier is) in Kansas for Leonard Peltier.
>While many across the US celebrate United States independence, youth will
>gather to protest the ongoing repression of Native Peoples, the prison
>industrial complex, and Leonard Peltiers imprisonment. More details TBA
>soon!
>
>AUGUST 14 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN LOS ANGELES-NO JUSTICE, NO VOTE!
>We need to send a clear message to the democrats that as long as they allow
>Leonard Peltier to remain in prison they will not receive our vote. The
>democrats, often depicting themselves as sympathetic to minority issues,
>should actively support Leonard Peltiers freedom as well as justice for all
>US political prisoners and the rights of communities of color if they are to
>receive the votes of those who believe in human rights. For this reason, a
>demonstration will be held at the Democratic Convention this August. For
>more information contact Bobby Castillo: 415-386-7041.
>
>OCTOBER 27-MARCH ON WASHINGTON DC/SIMULTANEOUS PROTEST IN SAN FRANCISCO
>Leonard Peltier must be freed before President Clinton leaves office. If
>Leonard Peltier is not free by October 27, 2000 two major protests will be
>held, one in DC and one in San Francisco. Plan to be at this demonstration
>to demand Leonard Peltiers immediate release. More details to be announced
>as they develop.
