To win this victory, the Soviet land lost over 27 million of its dear sons and daughters. 1,710 cities and towns and 70,000 villages were destroyed with a total material loss standing at 2,600 billion roubles. Having got over the losses and sacrifices, the Soviet Union seized back peace for mankind and defended the first socialist homeland in the world, and once again the Russian nation, together with other fraternal nationalities, proved the age-old truth of mankind: brutal people with an ambition to enslave other nations will not survive. From Genghis Khan to Napoleon to Hitler, all of them shared the same end of being annihilated to the very roots. This great victory is first of all the victories of socialism over fascism. The source of strength of the Soviet Union was accumulated in the process of socialist construction before that time. To fight against the huge army of fascism, armed with the most modern weapons at the time, the Soviet Union then could not have only heroism and courageous sacrifices of its soldiers. They also had the best tanks, the best war planes, the most effective economic management machine in mobilising all resources possible of the country. All these things were created during the Soviet time. The Second World War, the most destructive war the world ever had, happened right on the land of the Soviet Union, testing the material and spiritual values of socialism. Over half a century has gone by, mankind has seen super progress in all aspects, but deep in their minds, the people of the whole world will never forget the great strength of socialism in the 1920s and the 1930s which allowed the Soviet Union to stop short the adventuous path against humanity of Hitler's war machine.
