The exhibit, which was >first shown in a Havana church, was then transferred to a Daughters of >Charity facility in Pinar del Rio. The subversive exhibit, points out >Granma, was displayed without the knowledge of Cuban authorities. > >Granma recalled how after its May 16 editorial (an English translation >follows this summary) on a Polish counterrevolutionary delegation, priests >of the Pinar del Rio dioceses made a careful and respectful statement. >However, they erroneously described Dagoberto Valdes, as "a person of proven >integrity, committed to his homeland." In this regard, adds the Granma >article, the priests ignore the background of Dagoberto Valdes, who is "a >vulgar provocateur at the service of Cuba's enemies." > >On April 26th, Valdes met at a restaurant in Pinar del Rio with two >officials from the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. James P. Doran, the >First Secretary and Consul of the Interests Section and an agent of the >Central Intelligence Agency, and Lawrence N. Corwin, the First Secretary of >Culture and the Press at the U.S. diplomatic office in the Cuban capital, >traveled to Pinar del Rio and met for several hours with Valdes. > >The Cuban daily reports that during the meeting with the two U.S. >officials, Valdes urged them to continue working with intellectuals and >described his own work as "open warfare against the Cuban government." >Valdes also took the opportunity to slander Cardinal Jaime Ortega during the >meeting. > >Dagoberto Valdes has connections with counterrevolutionaries both in Cuba >and those in southern Florida. Granma notes that Valdes is a contributing >writer to the Miami-based El Nuevo Herald, "the mouthpiece of the >Cuban-American mafia" -- a privilege only accorded to well-known, so-called >"dissidents." > >According to the Cuban newspaper, the opinions of Valdes as the director of >the Center for Civic and Religious Training in Pinar del Rio are not shared >by the vast majority of the Catholic dioceses in this western province. The >article points out that Cardinal Jaime Ortega has expressed opposition to >provocations by those who have tried to use the Catholic Church as an >instrument against the Cuban Revolution. At the same time, the Granma >article clearly states that Havana has good relations with the Church in >Cuba and with Vatican authorities, who have also said they are opposed to >the use of the Catholic Church by counterrevolutionaries. > >The article in Wednesday's edition of Granma explains that the Polish >Ambassador to the island was not part of the clandestine organization of the >exhibit and that he quickly shut it down once he heard about it. > >With the closing of the exhibit, concludes Granma, the Polish adventure in >Pinar del Rio came to an end, to be continued by the usual adventures of >U.S. diplomats on the island. > > >Editorial - GRANMA INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL, May 16, 2000 > >THE POLISH GOVERNMENT'S COUNTERREVOLUTIONARY ADVENTURE IN CUBA > >IN the organization of the despicable conspiracy against Cuba at the Human >Rights Commission (HRC) in Geneva, the U.S. State Department wasn't only >assisted by its lackeys in the government of the Czech Republic. The >government of Poland, another ex-socialist country that has now become both >a NATO member and subservient to the United States, was a co-author of the >project and an accomplice in the strategy. > >Our press didn't pay much attention to this satellite country because of the >far worse record that belongs to the Czechs. Their Havana embassy has spent >the last 10 years directly conspiring with and playing the part of mistress >to the U.S. Interests Section. The crafty members of the Polish Foreign >Ministry thought themselves too clever or too important to attract any >criticism. Perhaps they thought they were immune. > >The treacherous plot that was hatched in Geneva was approved on Monday, >April 18. Fourteen days later, on May 2, Polish Senator Zbigniew >Romanszewski, who is president of the Human Rights and Legal Affairs >Commission of the Polish Senate, arrived in Havana accompanied by another >Polish citizen, Piotr Kielanows. The publicly declared reason for their >visit was to coordinate a scientific and technical collaboration project >between the two countries. > >Previously, on April 27, two other Polish citizens had arrived in Havana, >both as tourists. These were the senator's wife, Zofia Romanszewska, and a >translator, Gabriela Banach Klaanoask. The four visitors moved into a >private house at 256 L Street, Apartment 501, between 17th and 19th streets >in the Vedado district of Havana. > >On May 5, 6 and 7, together with diplomats from the Polish embassy in Cuba >and counterrevolutionary leaders Hictor Palacio Ruiz, Oscar Espinosa Chepe >and Pedro Pablo Alvarez Ramos, the four traveled to the city of Pinar del >Rmo to take part in what they called an "economists' meeting." Taking part >in this meeting were a small group of counterrevolutionaries who act under >the mantle of the supposed "Center for Civic-Religious Education." This >organization was created by the Catholic lay activist Dagoberto Valdiz >Hernandez, a systematic slanderer and a bitter enemy of the Revolution. He >endeavors to protect his fraudulent activities by taking advantage of the >respect, consideration and facilities that the Revolution gives to activists >of the Catholic church and other Christian institutions, the Jewish >community, Afro-Cuban cults and all other religions in this country. > >Within the framework of the supposed "economic" meeting, Senator Zbigniew >Romanszewski organized a conference on May 5 which was entitled Culture and >Globalization. During this conference, he spoke about the disappearance of >socialism in Poland and the methods that had been used by the Polish >opposition to achieve this, including those of a clandestine nature. > >The following day, May 6, the senator and other Polish officials had a >three-hour meeting with Catholic Bishop Josi Siro Gonzalez Bacallao of Pinar >del Rmo diocese. What did they talk about during their long meeting? Nobody >knows. After the meeting, together with the bishop, they again met with the >aforementioned counterrevolutionaries. > >On May 7, after having returned to Havana, Zofia Romaszewska and Gabriela >Banach Klaanoask visited the reclusive residence of counterrevolutionary >Oscar Elmas Biscet. He is a proven agent of the Cuban American National >Foundation and is known for his numerous acts of provocation, among them the >supposed fast, together with other persons, which received much publicity in >the international press. It was later made known and proved that in fact >each participant in this "fast" was consuming in excess of 4,000 calories >per day in carbohydrates and protein. > >Biscet's wife, who is also very active in these extravagant actions, >received an invitation from the senator to attend a concert that took place >that same day in the San Juan de Letran Church on 19th Street, between I and >J Streets in Vedado district. > >At the end of the concert, the senator invited her to visit an exhibition of >posters and paintings around the theme of prisoners of conscience that was >being displayed in one of the church's halls. > >As is well known, those in Cuba who commit acts against the Revolution >including conspiracy, defamation, sabotage, terrorism or who are traitors >acting in the service of the United States are awarded the title of >prisoners of conscience by our enemies. > >The pieces included in the exhibition tried to give a retrospective of the >postwar political processes of Poland, with emphasis on a negative view of >the recovery brought about by Polish communists. It showed the rise and >development of the Solidarity union and the part this played in the downfall >of Polish socialism and the support that was given by the Polish Catholic >Church to this turn of events. The exhibition was promoted by the >political-cultural advisor and press officer of the Polish embassy, >Krzysztof Jacek Hinz. Its opening was attended by various members of the >diplomatic corps located in Havana, including representatives of the >embassies of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine >(all ex-members of the socialist bloc or the USSR), along with those of the >Netherlands, Spain, and others. > >Also included among participants was the aforementioned director of the >Center for Civic-Religious Education, Dagoberto Valdis, who traveled from >Pinar del Rmo. > >During the exhibition, the Polish senator handed Biscet's wife an envelope >containing an unknown quantity of dollars. He and his companions asked her >for more information about counterrevolutionary activities in Cuba, made >agreements about periodic contacts with Polish diplomats and told her that >the concert had been organized in honor of her and her husband. > >During the evening of that same day, May 7, Senator Romanszewski and his >three companions went to the residence of the consul to the Polish embassy. >to meet with a group of counterrevolutionaries. These included Osvaldo >Alfonso Valdis, Nery Gorostiza Campoalegre, Hictor Palacio Ruiz and Gisela >Delgado Sablsn. > >The Polish consul, host of the meeting, gave the floor to the senator. He >recalled his experiences as a member of Solidarity and how they had worked >towards the downfall of socialism in Poland, even though they were a >relatively small opposition group and only represented a minority. He said >that bearing in mind the international situation and what he called the boom >that was being achieved in the internal counterrevolutionary movement in >Cuba, he foresaw only five more years at best for the Cuban Revolution and >said that this was the reason why Fidel has been firing the masses with >enthusiasm lately. He felt that this could be dangerous, because of the >possibilities that either the people may turn against him or that they may >violently attack the opposition. It is clear that the Polish senator didn't >waste one moment of his "scientific-technical collaboration project," >predicting popular reaction to certain acts of provocation or to the >rigorous application of revolutionary laws, which is, logically, the real >root of what they are searching for, in order to feed the ardent campaigns >of imperialism and its allies against Cuba. > >By way of a curious note, one could detect a certain rancor and frustration >towards the Miami mafia among the small counterrevolutionary groups. When >the senator asked them about their opinions on the exiles, they responded >that the latter were trying to assume the leadership and impose conditions >on those whom, since they are actually in Cuba, should have more rights in >the future. They also said that the leaders of the exiles sometimes behave >"hysterically and without control" and that "far from winning, they always >lose against Fidel." > >When the senator asked them their opinion on the effects of the blockade, a >new line of tactics that has previously been seen in some >counterrevolutionary groups appeared again. They said they opposed the >blockade because "it covers up the real problems of the country under the >socialist regime." > >The Polish senator was also interested to learn about "repression against >dissidents." On this subject, there was some disagreement among those he was >meeting with. Some felt that there was flexibility, while others argued that >repression was harsher than ever and that the number of political prisoners >had tripled. Finally, the illustrious and learned Polish senator gave his >opinion that the Cuban system constitutes a dictatorship and that it is >undergoing a similar process to that which took place in the ex-socialist >countries of Europe. He advised the counterrevolutionaries present to >therefore prepare themselves to assume the responsibility of governing the >country. He assured them that the Cuban system would necessarily degenerate >towards corruption, as had occurred in his country, when the old leaders who >had accumulated the biggest quantities of money bought up everything when >the big change in government took place. > >At the end of the meeting, the Polish visitors received 11 documents from >the Cubans meeting with them. It was the high point of Polish Senator >Zbigniew Romanszewski's secret mission to Cuba. > >Zofia Romanszewska and Gabriela Banach Klaanoask left the island on May 9. >The following day, in a very secretive manner, so that nobody would know >what they had been up to, Senator Zbigniew Romanszewski and Piotr Kielanows >also departed from Cuba. > >During the visit of the Polish conspirators and their long hours of >meetings, not one word was mentioned about the kidnapping of the Cuban child >Elian Gonzalez, nor of the heroic and exemplary struggle of our people for >him to be returned to his family in Cuba. > >It is offensive to think that the mysterious delegation arrived in our >country 24 hours after the biggest commemoration ever of International >Worker's Day, to which the whole city turned out. After congregating in >Revolution Square, they marched through the streets of the capital to the >Josi Martm Anti-Imperialist Tribunal in front of the U.S. Interests Section. > >Certainly, during the absurd dialogues between the Polish delegation and the >mercenaries and traitors, they dreamed of destroying the Cuban Revolution. >They forecast that its end is near. They forget that there have been more >than four decades of similar predictions and that the greatest power on >earth has been frustrated when it runs up against the strength and tenacity >of a people that has already written many indelible pages of history, a >people that today is more conscious, more experienced and more organized >than ever. They make laughable comparisons between the political processes >of Cuba and Poland, comparisons between the real thing and a parody, between >something heroic and something ridiculous. They're unable to believe in >honor and loyalty to principles. As regards the "big change" and the "great >democracy" in Poland, one has to recognize that there, as in the Czech >Republic, what actually occurred was the confiscation of the property of the >nation and its conversion into the private property of opportunists, >traitors and cronies. Imperialism's swan song and the insane dreams of >living in Western-style consumer societies that are unsustainable and >incompatible with the destiny of humankind, were deadly poison for those who >weren't properly prepared to defend themselves ideologically and >politically. But despite all that the United States was able to do against >the combined forces of the socialist countries, it hasn't been able to >accomplish the same against a small island only 90 miles from its coast, >even though we are alone and doubly blockaded. > >Our country has the honor of having demonstrated the invincible force that a >just and truly humane society can generate. The colossal battle its people >are fighting today demonstrates that fact. > >Shame on those governments have that are only known in the world for their >sad reputation of occupying the first places among the lackeys of an empire >that is as increasingly decadent as it is increasingly powerful. We will go >on monitoring the misdeeds of their emissaries who come to Cuba to "promote >scientific-technical cooperation" or as "conscientious diplomatic staff" and >whose work one would suppose to be to develop friendship with this country. >They are being trained today by the U.S. State Department or the CIA, whose >record of errors and horrors is unsurpassable. We have been trained by 41 >years of victorious Revolution. The fruits of this can be seen all around, >in a people more united, more deeply patriotic and internationalist, and in >a Revolution that is stronger and more invincible than ever. > >Everything that has been done over many years, both in Miami and in Cuba, to >promote a counterrevolution, with the dirty war, the mercenary invasion at >the Bay of Pigs, the threats of nuclear war and the genocidal blockade, has >been destroyed. Now all that remains are the isolated shouts of the >dispersed fragments of the Cuban-American mafia, which are hard to >distinguish from those of the counterrevolutionaries inside Cuba instigated, >provoked and paid in various ways and means by those in other countries who >are anxious, more so now than ever, to avoid their total demoralization and >prove that they exist. > >Another Ronald Reagan would have to be born, he would have to create a new >CANF, and the times would have to change completely. The world is less >governable every day; lies and demagoguery are no longer any use-they are >spent forces. The future belongs to truth, universal rebellion and a >worldwide struggle for justice and survival. Even though there are more >nuclear missiles, the true strategic defenses of the peoples are the >missiles of morals-undetectable and indestructible. > >NATO and its new strategic concepts are an anachronism. Most of the richest >and exploitative countries of the world are against unilateral hegemony. The >economic and political system that sustains them, highly touted despite for >the crimes committed over the centuries against the people, cannot guarantee >peace and sustainable development for the world. Nor can it offer its own >citizens' protection against high and rising unemployment, nor can it offer >full economic and social security. They will move shakily from one crisis to >the next. They live a day at a time, slaves to blind laws that deny the >rationality and intelligence of the human species. All of the arms and all >the traitors together can't to change mankind's destiny, unless we resign >ourselves to disappearing. Cubans believe in humanity and in its >intellectual and moral capacity to overcome even the most difficult >obstacles. This is a truth that an intelligent and learned, heroic and >politically cultured people have won the right to proclaim, marching along a >single correct path that those satellite countries and others incapable of >thinking for themselves have never taken, and that is the reason why they >are so hopelessly lost. > >The continuation of the path that we have followed since January 1, 1959, is >a full and complete guarantee, for current and future generations of Cubans, >of a future worth living and worth the sacrifices that we have made. For the >poor and marginalized majority of the planet, Cuba constitutes today an >example which no force in the world can erase. > >(c) Copyright 2000. All rights reserved.
