U.S. launches drug war in Guatemala
May 24, 2000
MEXICO CITY (May 23) XINHUA - U.S. Southern Command Chief General
Charles Wilhelm Tuesday launched a 'war' against drug trafficking in the
Central American country of Guatemala, a dispatch from the capital said.
United States and Guatemala will step up their cooperation in battling
drug trafficking under the program "Maya-Jaguar." The program will allow
American soldiers to take part in anti-narcotic operations being carried
out in Guatemala, Wilhelm was quoted as saying at the headquarters of
Guatemala's anti-narcotic police.
Under the "Maya-Jaguar" plan, 40 U.S. marines will work with 580 staff
members of Direction of Anti-narcotic Operations (Doan) of Guatemala.
They will operate three Blackhawk and two Chinook helicopter gunships,
some land vehicles, and a boat to patrol Guatemala's Caribbean coast.
Guatemala's Congress passed a bill on April 13 that allows 99 U. S.
soldiers to work in cooperative programs to help fight drug trafficking
in this Central American country.
