ASSAD BELGRADE, June 12 (Tanjug) - Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic
expressed his condolences for the death of Syrian President Hafez El Assad
in a telegram to the Syrian people, leadership, and to the family of the
deceased president of Syria, the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry said.

CONDOLENCES OF BULATOVIC TO SYRIAN PREMIER BELGRADE, June 12 (Tanjug) -
Yugoslav Premier Momir Bulatovic has sent a telegram of condolences to
Syrian Premier Muhamed Mustafa Meru with expressions of deepest sympathy
for the death of Syrian President Hafez Al-Asad, the Yugoslav Information
Ministry said.

YUGOSLAVIA - CHINA YUGOSLAVIA APPRECIATES GREATLY SUPPORT AND AID OF
CHINESE PEOPLE BELGRADE, June 12 (Tanjug) - Yugoslav parliament lower house
president Milomir Minic and upper house president Srdja Bozovic hosted
Sunday evening in the federation building in Belgrade an official dinner in
honer of the president of the permanent committee of the Pan-Chinese
People's Congress, Li Peng. Besides the delegation of the Pan-Chinese
People's Congress, which arrived on a two-day official and friendly visit
to Yugoslavia, the dinner was attended by representatives of the Yugoslav
and Serbian governments, Serbian and Yugoslav parliaments, the Yugoslav
Army, businessmen and public figures. Minic, in his toast, expressed
sincere welcome to the distinguished guest, his wife and the parliamentary
delegation of PR China, stressing that the visit marked the further
development of good relations of the two states, founded in the joint
declaration of friendship and cooperation between FR Yugoslavia and PR
China, which was signed in November 1997 in Beijing by Presidents Slobodan
Milosevic and Jiang Zeming. He pointed out that it confirmed the mutual
interest and readiness for continuous, stable and long-term cooperation
development. Responding to the toast, Li Peng said he felt the deep
friendship of Yugoslavs towards the Chinese people and assessed that last
year, fighting for the preservation of sovereignty and territorial
integrity, Yugoslavia with an indomitable spirit resisted the barbarian
aggression of the largest world military block. Pressing for the
uninterrupted development of relations with Yugoslavia, in the economic,
cultural, scientific-technological and other fields, "on the basis of the
five principles of peaceful coexistence," he recalled that China and
Yugoslavia have a similar historical experience in fighting foreign
aggression and that they appreciate greatly sovereignty and territorial
integrity which they did not obtain easily. "China is ready, along with
other peace-loving countries, including Yugoslavia, to devote to the
establishment of a new international political and economic order, and to
give its contribution to the creation of a better future for mankind," Li
said.

GAO DIJAN LAYS WREATH AT TOMB TO UNKNOWN SOLDIER NEAR BELGRADE BELGRADE,
June 12 (Tanjug) - Envoy of the President of the Pan-Chinese People's
Congress Li Peng, member of the permanent committee and president of the
Congress commission for agriculture and rural areas, Gao Dijan laid a
wreath on Monday at the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier on Mt Avala, some ten
km. from Belgrade. "Those who gave their lives for their state will leave
an eternal mark in history," Gao wrote down in the book of remembrance. Gao
Dijan, after the wreath-laying, saluted an honourary guard unit.
Accompanying the Chinese delegation were Yugoslav parliament defense and
security committee chairman and Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) deputy
grouping president in the lower house, Milutin Stojkovic, and a
representative of the Yugoslav Army, Gen. Ljubisa Stojimirovic. The
delegation of the Chinese parliament, headed by Chinese parliament
president Li Peng, arrived on Sunday on an official visit to Yugoslavia.

DEEPENING OF CHINESE-YUGOSLAV UNDERSTANDING, MUTUAL CONFIDENCE BEIJING,
June 12 (Tanjug) - Leading Chinese media is giving marked publicity to the
visit of the president of the Chinese National People's Congress
(parliament), Li Peng, to Yugoslavia. Li Peng, the leading daily Renmin
Ribao said, underlined he was "looking forward to the upcoming in-depth
talks with top Yugoslav leaders, and to extensive contacts with friends
from different fields of life." The news agency Xinhua gave prominence to
the upcoming meeting of Li Peng with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
The press said that the goal of the meeting was to look into ways for
expanding cooperation of the two countries, the president of the Chinese
parliament said. In Beijing are emphasized also the words of the president
of the Chinese parliament that China is consistently pursuing an
independent peace-loving foreign policy and that it is ready to make joint
efforts with the government and people of Yugoslavia, to constantly
encourage the upgrading of Yugoslav-Chinese relations to a higher level.
Chinese reports from Belgrade emphasize the very warm and friendly welcome
reserved for the Chinese delegation at Belgrade airport and announce Li
Peng's address to Yugoslav parliament deputies. Beijing has already
assessed that Li Peng's visit represents a "very important event in the
history of Chinese-Yugoslav relations."

YUGOSLAVIA - RUSSIA CONGRATULATIONS OF BULATOVIC TO KASYANOV BELGRADE, June
12 (Tanjug) - Yugoslav Prime Minister Momir Bulatovic has sent, on the
occasion of the national holiday of the Russian Federation - Statehood Day,
cordial congratulations to the Russian Prime Minister, Mihail Kasyanov, the
Yugoslav Information Ministry said. Prime Minister Bulatovic said he was
confident that bilateral cooperation between the two countries and the
traditionally close and friendly peoples will be further developed and
strengthened successfully, and in that way help strengthen peace and
stability in Europe and in the world.

FROM THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA UPPER HOUSE VERIFIES MANDATE OF
DEPUTIES FROM SERBIA BELGRADE, June 12 (Tanjug) - The Chamber of the
Republics (upper house) of Yugoslav federal parliament on Monday, at the
first session of the first special session this year, has verified mandates
for 20 newly-elected deputies to the chamber from the Serbian Assembly. In
the chamber are also 20 deputies from Montenegro. Upper house president is
Srdja Bozovic, a deputy from Montenegro, and the duties of vice-president
will continue to be performed by Gorica Gajevic, whose mandate was
confirmed at recent elections in the Serbian Assembly. She was elected to
the upper house of Yugoslav parliament unanimously at the proposal of 10
deputies. The house, also unanimously, from the ranks of newly-elected
deputies, elected members and chairmen of parliament working bodies.

DIVIDED VICTORY OF RIVAL COALITIONS AT LOCAL ELECTIONS IN MONTENEGRO
PODGORICA, June 12 (Tanjug) - At the local elections in the Montenegrin
capital of Podgorica and in the coastal town of Herzeg Novi, have won the
two largest rival coalitions. According to ballots counted over the night,
the coalition "For a Better Life" led by the current Montenegrin President
Milo Djukanovic has won in Podgorica, while the opposition coalition
"Yugoslavia", which with the support of the Yugoslav Left and the Serbian
Radical Party is headed by Yugoslav Prime Minister Momir Bulatovic, has won
power in Herzeg Novi. In Podgorica, the coalition "For a Better Life" has
won 50 percent of ballots, the coalition "Yugoslavia" nearly 40, and the
Liberal Alliance 7.5 percent. The coalition "Yugoslavia," will have, most
probably, 22 deputy mandates in Podgorica parliament, the coalition "For a
Better Life" was more successful than at the previous elections and can
count on 28 deputy mandates and the remaining four mandates will probably
go to the Liberal Alliance. In Herzeg Novi, the coalition Yugoslavia won a
convincing victory and with 19 deputy mandates, out of a total of 35, will
dominate the municipality. The coalition For a Better Life will have 14
mandates, while the remaining two deputy mandates went to the Liberal
Alliance. Municipal election commissions in Podgorica and Herzeg Novi will
make public the first unofficial results during the day, and after that
complete data will be processed from all polling stations.

SERBIAN PROVINCE OF KOSOVO AND METOHIJA INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST ENSURE
SECURITY OF SERBS KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, June 12 (Tanjug) - On Sunday evening
in Kosovska Mitrovica was held a one-hour rally of protest to the
international community called "One Year After," attended by several
thousand Serbs. It was assessed that despite the arrival of the
international forces (June 11, 1999) after the cessation of NATO's armed
aggression (March-June), in the course of one year have been conducted an
organized crime and genocide over Serbs because from Kosovo and Metohija
have been expelled about 350,000 non-Albanians, killed or kidnapped
thousands of Serbs, burned down or blasted about 50,000 houses and blasted
at least 100 Serbian churches. At the protest rally it was said that Serbs
must be ensured security, freedom of movement and economic development,
that the kidnapped be released and the expelled who fled with the blessing
of the international community returned. The protest rally ended peacefully
without incidents.
