U.S. AND HUNGARIAN FORCES ENGAGED IN EXERCISE LARIAT RESPONSE
Soldiers and airmen of the U.S. Army in Europe and U.S. Air Forces in Europe deployed
into Hungary today to begin Exercise Lariat Response, a power projection exercise.
The exercise is designed to demonstrate NATO's commitment to maintaining peace in the
region and the capability to rapidly reinforce coalition forces. It also exercises
the U.S. military's ability to conduct combined operations, to include airborne
assault and airland training.
Approximately 145 soldiers successfully parachuted into Hungary to begin the exercise.
Once on the ground, they met up with counterparts from the Hungarian Rapid Reaction
and Reconnaissance Forces to move on to further training at the Taborflava Training
Area in Hungary. Other planned training opportunities include weapons familiarization
and live fire exercises, joint patrols, Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System
(MILES) training, and night vision equipment familiarization training.
Participating forces include elements of the Army's Southern European Task Force's
(SETAF's) 173rd Airborne Brigade based in Vicenza, Italy, and the 1st Armored Division
and V Corps based in Germany. Three U.S. Air Force C-130 aircraft from Ramstein AB,
Germany, and six UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from V Corps will provide support for the
jump exchange training.
Exercise forces are under the command of Army Gen. Montgomery Meigs, USAREUR commander
and head of the Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise program.
The exercise is slated to run for two days, then forces will re-deploy back to their
home stations. For more details, visit the USAREUR web page at <a
