Romanian Defense Minister Reaffirms Wish to Integrate with NATO
BUCHAREST, Jun 29, 2000 -- (BBC Monitoring) Romanian Defense Minister
Sorin Frunzaverde on Wednesday [28th June], met Supreme Allied Commander
Europe Gen Joseph W. Ralston.
"We have reaffirmed Romania's wish for the integration with NATO, a wish
that is supported by the Romanian political class," Sorin Frunzaverde
said at the end of talks with Gen Ralston, adding that the best example
in this respect was the endorsement by Romania's parliament of the
Romanian battalion in Bosnia. The minister of defense said the national
plan for Romania's integration with NATO had been approached during
talks. He also said that the "integration with the North-Atlantic
Alliance is regarded as a team activity, first of all with the NATO
structures, in the various bodies of the Alliance, and, secondly, at a
bilateral level, with NATO member countries, such as Poland, the Czech
Republic and Hungary, countries that are sharing their experience with
us." "NATO should create crisis facilities in the Balkans, facilities
that are related to the management of the air space and the setting up
of a center for the road traffic management," Romania's defense minister
also said. Frunzaverde added that Romania would continue to support NATO
in all its demarches for achieving peace, stability and security in the
area.
In his turn, Gen Joseph Ralston said he was responsible for advising
Romania's military and political authorities on the integration with
NATO, the visit being necessary to get a clear image of Romania's
situation.
