A
continuaci�n, un breve resumen de los m�s recientes acontecimientos de la lucha
por la Paz de Vieques. El pasado fin de semana - 1 y 2 de julio - se
celebr� aqu� el Primer Tr�alo Internacional por la Paz de Vieques con la
participaci�n de atletas de Puerto Rico, Canad�, EU, Ecuador, Chile, Hong Kong,
St. Vincent, Brazil, entre otros paises. El evento se coordin� con el
Comit� Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) y se llev� a cabo como
expresi�n de solidaridad deportista con la causa viequense.
Durante la vigilia del s�bado (1 de julio) por la noche, m�s de cuatrocientas personas se congregaron en el Campamento Justicia y Paz para protestar y para escuchar al qu�mico ambientalista y asesor cient�fico del CPRDV, Neftal� Garc�a, sobre los horribles efectos que tienen los contaminantes militares en la salud de nuestra gente. Habl� tamb�n el ex Alcalde PNP de Vieques (1977-80), Radam�s Tirado, sobre un caso de clase que se prepara contra la Marina por da�os a la salud causados por la contaminaci�n militar. Cerca de las once de la noche, una guagua escolar-militar se asom� al port�n desde el interior de la base, lista para salir a la carretera donde estabamos piqueteando. Mantuvimos el piquete por m�s de media hora hasta que finalmente la Fuerza de Choque de la Polic�a de Puerto Rico cruz� la calle en formaci�n para evitar que bloquearamos el camino y sali� la guagua militar- completamente vacia. El lunes, 3 de julio, El Colectivo Amigos de Vieques - un nucleo de universitarios boricuas que mantuvieron por largos meses un campamento de resistencia en la zona de bombardeo - present� el documental: Vieques - cr�nicas desde la desobediencia. En pantalla grande en los terrenos del Campamento Justicia y Paz, cientos de vecinos de Vieques asistieron al estreno en la Isla Nena del documental que narra, con fotos y m�sica, el proceso de lucha en los campamentos de desobediencia civil hasta los arrestos y desalojos del pasado 4 de mayo. Varios cantantes universitarios ofrecieron a nuestro pueblo una noche muy especial de arte y m�sica al servicio de la Paz de Vieques. El 4 de julio, se llev� a cabo una serie de actividades de denuncia y protesta, aprovechando la ocasi�n de la celebraci�n del D�a de la Independencia de los Estados Unidos. A las 12 del medio d�a, la Alianza de Mujeres Viequenses celebraron un acto frente al port�n de Camp Garc�a, que incluy� una dramatizaci�n sobre la lucha del pueblo y una cadena humana frente a la base en s�mbolo de la unidad del pueblo viequense. Alrededor de la 1:30 PM, aparecieron en el camino militar dentro de la base a poca distancia del port�n y de todos nosotros, un grupo de 16 personas que hab�an penetrado la zona restringida de la Marina. El grupo, compuesto mayormente de estudiantes de leyes de la UPR junto a integrantes del Colectivo Cayo Yay� y del Campamento Justicia y Paz de Vieques, caminaron hasta llegar al port�n donde fueron arrestados. Les esperaban un nucleo de polic�as militares que prendieron - sin la m�s m�nima provocaci�n ni justificaci�n - una m�quina que roci� con gas de pimienta tanto a los arrestados como a la polic�a de Puerto Rico que vigila la entrada de la base al otro lado (civil) del port�n y a decenas de participantes en una manifestaci�n pac�fica (incluyendo a ni�os y ancianos). Una joven que filmaba los eventos fue atacada con gas de pimienta por un miembro de la polic�a de Puerto Rico. Fue un despliegue de la brutalidad e insensibilidad que caracteriza las fuerzas militares y en particular, el atropello y abuso que practica la Marina contra nuestra gente. A una hora de los arrestos de los 16, los militares los sacaron por el port�n de Camp Garc�a en una guagua grande, no sin antes tener que pedirle a la Fuerza de Choque a que removiera a una delegaci�n del Colectivo Resistencia Amigos de Vieques que bloqueaban el camino. En el proceso, los miembros de la polic�a, tuvieron la oportunidad de demostrar lo que aprendieron de los militares y dispararon libremente gas de pimienta a los manifestantes. Es necesario aqu� reconocer el extraordinario trabajo de la juventud viequense-puertorrique�a en esta dif�cil etapa de lucha. El ejemplo de valor y sacrificio que nos ofreci� el Colectivo Amigos de Vieques - un contingente de estudiantes universitarios boricuas entregados a la defensa de Biek� - dej� claro la capacidad de la juventud puertorrique�a de organizar, en forma disciplinada, acciones de impacto contra la violencia militar. Al mismo tiempo, hay que recalcar la participaci�n destacada de los jovenes viequenses en las acciones de desobediencia civil en Vieques durante los pasados meses. Los gu�as que han ayudado a garantizar la entrada a la zona restringida y llevar a los manifestantes al �rea de impacto y a otras zonas dentro de la base, han sido mayormente jovenes viequenses. Los Jinetes por la Paz se compone de un n�cleo de jovenes de Vieques dedicados a la liberaci�n de su pueblo del yugo militar. La Juventud Viequense Unida ha organizado una serie de actividades de concientizaci�n y se preparan para acciones de desobediencia civil. La continuidad de esta lucha est� bien garantizada! Tambi�n durante el fin de semana pasado se inici� la construcci�n en el Campamento Justicia y Paz de una facilidad para albergar a las personas que todos los d�as llegan a participar en las actividades de lucha. El compa�ero Guelo de Vega Baja dise�� la estructura y comenz� el proceso de construcci�n que se espera completar en las pr�ximas dos semanas. Cualquier aportaci�n econ�mica para este proyecto como para los montones de otros gastos que implica esta larga y continua lucha por la paz, ser� grandemente agradecido. El CPRDV continua ofreciendo apoyo econ�mico y log�stico a los arrestados y familiares. Durante las acciones de desobediencia civil en que han sido arrestados viequenses, el CPRDV cubre los gastos para asegurar el regreso de nuestra gente a Vieques, despu�s de las horas de operaci�n regular de la lancha de pasajeros de Fajardo a Vieques o de los aviones. Los costos de la gasolina de las lanchas de pescadores y el flete de aviones para el regreso de nuestros arrestados a Vieques, junto a los gastos relacionados con fianza y la transportaci�n al tribunal para las vistas, son altos y subiendo. El CPRDV coordin� con los Empleados Federales por la Paz de Vieques, una marcha y concentraci�n en el Campamento Justicia y Paz, frente al port�n de la instalaci�n militar (Camp Garc�a) aqu� ma�ana, 9 de julio. Mientras terminamos este escrito, nos informaron sobre el arresto anoche (Viernes, 7 de julio) de Gazir Sued, l�der del Colectivo Amigos de Vieques. Gazir fue arrestado en su hogar por no pagar la fianza de $1000.00 impuesto en el momento de su arresto junto a los Jinetes por la Paz de Vieques en junio. Tito de Jes�s est� en solitario en la c�rcel federal por iniciar un ayuno. Expresamos nuestro profundo respeto, solidaridad y amor por los dos compa�eros y le exhortamos a todas las personas solidarias con esta lucha a mantenerse atentos a la situaci�n de estos dos luchadores y de los miembros del PIP encarcelados por su participaci�n en las recientes acciones de desobedience civil aqu�. Warm greetings of solidarity from
Vieques. Here we present a brief summary of recent events in the struggle
for Peace on Vieques. Last week end - 1 and 2 July - we held the First
International Triatholon for Peace in Vieques, with the participation of
athletes from Puerto Rico, Canada, United States, Ecuador, Chile, Hong Kong, St.
Vincent, Brazil, among other countries. The event was coordinated with the
Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV) and promoted as an
expression of athletic solidarity with the Vieques cause.
During the Vigil held on Saturday night, more than 400 people at Peace and Justice Camp (accross the street from the entrance to the Navy installation of Camp Garc�a) protested the Navy presence and listened to chemist, Dr. Neftal� Garc�a, environmental and scientific advisor to the CPRDV, on the horrible effects of military contamination on the health of our people. Around 11:00PM, a military school bus approached the gate from inside Camp Garc�a, ready to leave and turn onto the road where we were protesting. We sustained a moving picket line for more than half an hour before finally the Puerto Rico Police brigade (Riot Police) crossed the road in formation to allow the Navy bus to leave the area. On Monday, 3 July, the Friends of Vieques Collective - a group of Puerto Rican university students who maintained for months a resistence camp in the bombing area - presented the documentary: Vieques: chronicles from disobedience. On a big screen hundreds of residentes of Vieques watched the documentary - a photo narrative on the life in the resistence camps and the arrests by Navy and federal agents on 4 May, 2000. The students brought several singers and offered a very special night of art and music at the sevice of our strguggle for peace. On the 4th of July, we held a series of activities to denounce the military presence, taking advantage of the Independence Day celebration in the US. At 12 noon, the Vieques Women�s Alliance celebrated an activity in front of the gate to Camp Garc�a, including a drama about the struggle and a human chain symbolizing the unity of the people. Around 1:30 in the afternoon, 16 people who had entered the Navy�s restricted zone, appeared on the road inside Camp Garc�a. The group consisting mainly of law students from UPR, together with representatives of the Yay� Key Collective and the Peace and Justice Camp, walked until they reached the gate where they were arrested. Waiting at the gate were several military policemen who, without the least provocation or justification, turned on a machine that sprayed pepper gas at those being arrsted, the Puerto Rican policemen outside the gate and dozens of peacefull protesters in the street,including children and older folks. This was a show of force indicative of the brutality and insensibility that characterizes the abuses practiced against the people of Vieques by the US Navy. An hour after the arrest of the 16, military personnel brought the prisioners out of Camp Garc�a in a large bus, not before the Puerto Rico Riot Police had to clear the street of delegates from the Friends of Vieques Collective, who put their bodies on the line in defense of those arrested. In the process, the police also sprayed people with pepper gas, imitating the earlier actions of the military police. We need to recongnize the extraordinary work of the Puerto Rican/Viequense youth in this difficult phase of the struggle. The example of valor and sacrifice that the Collective Friends of Vieques - a contingent of Puerto Rican university students dedicated to the defense of Bieke - clearly showed us their capacity to organize, in a disciplined manner, significant actions against the military violence. At the same time we must mention the important participation of Vieques youth in the civil disobedience actions here during the past months. The "guides" that have helped guarentee the entrance into the Navy's restricted area and arrive at the impact zone and other areas inside the military base, have been mainly young people of Vieques. The Horseman for Peace, is a Vieques youth group dedicated to the liberation of their people from the miltary yoke. The Vieques Youth United has organized a series of activities to raise consciousness and are preparing to participate in upcoming civil disobedience actions. The continuity of this struggle is well guaranteed! Also during the past week end, we began construction in the Peace and Justice Camp, of a "housing" facility for people who arrive to participate in the many actions related to our struggle. Guelo, compa�ero from Vega Baja and the musician-arquitect of the Vieques struggle - Noel Hern�ndez - prepared the plans and began the building of the facility that should be finished in the next couple of weeks. All donations for this proyect are welcome. The Committee for the Rescue and Develoment of Vieques is the principal support organization for Viequenses arrested. During the civil disobedience actions in which Viequenses have been arrested, the CRDV covers costs of transporting arrested and family to and from Vieques and the main island. Often this is after regular hours of the ferry and airplane services. The Committee has paid gasoline for fishermen to transport our people home and has rented airplanes at night for the same purpose. These costs, as well as bail costs are accumulating. Any fianancial support can be sent to the CRDV at Box 1424 Vieques, PR 00765. Tomorrow (Sunday, 9 July) we receive a delegation of Federal Employees for Peace in Vieques. In coordination with the CRDV, the groupo of federal workers from Puerto Rico will march from the port area to Camp Peace and Justice, in front of the gates to Camp Garc�a. As we finish writing these notes, we received information that Gazir Sued was arrested last night in his home for refusing to pay $1000.00 bail after being arrested with the Vieques Horsemen for Peace in June. Tito Kayak is in solitary in the federal jail in San Juan for fasting. We express our profound solidarity and love for both compa�eros and exhort all those who support the Vieques struggle to remain informed about the situation of Tito and Gazir as well as many members of the PIP who are still in jail for their recent civil disobedience actions here.
