> Welcome to the new issue of evil:austria!
>
> First, we want to thank everybody for the overwhelming positive reactions
> to the first issue of evil:austria. The reactions clearly pointed out the
> importance and necessity of this project and give us the strength to
> continue!! We were absolutely happy about the many offers to help with the
> various translations, and especially about tranlations emerging suddenly
> :-)))) So, the last version now exists in German, English, Spanish,
French,
> and Finnish. Whoever wants a specific translation should simply send us an
> email or have a look at our brand-new homepage. At http://www.raw.at you
> will find the different translations of evil:austria in the section
> 'Newsletter' (and of course a lot of other interesting stuff!). If
somebody
> has the possibility to translate the newsletter into any other language,
> please let us know. Sure thing, we also want to thank all the people who
> distributed the newsletter all over the world!
>
> For those who don't know what this is all about a few words of
explanation:
>
> evil:austria is our monthly newsletter which supplies info about the
actual
> situation in Austria and the consequences of the new government. We have
> decided to produce this newsletter because we realized that the knowledge
> about the real situation in Austria, especially abroad, is very limited.
> The government has achieved its target that with the discussion about the
> "sanctions" of the European Union the daily madness in this country has
> vanished from the agenda of the international public. We want to avoid
this
> resulting in a "normalization" of the right/right-extreme Austrian
> government. We also do this for egoistic reasons, because international
> monitoring prevents things from getting even worse at least for the
moment.
> Therefore, it is very important to spread this Newsletter as far as
> possible, so that as many people as possible are informed about the
> situation in Austria. Thus: distribute it, distribute it, distribute it!
> Feel free to use this material for other publications, but please, send us
> a mail if you do so.
>
> Send criticism and all remarks, if possible in German or English, to:

> [1] Government wants to forbid demonstrations
>
> In a recent press conference some members of OeVP demanded a ban of the
> "illegal" (they are not announced to the police) weekly Thursday's
> demonstrations, because as the speaker for public safety, Wolfgang Ulm,
> stated, 57 police officers have been injured. Astonishingly, police reject
> this demand and refer to a decision of the supreme court in 1985 which
> ruled that non-announcement of a demonstration is not sufficient for a
ban.
> Moreover, it would be a problem to break apart 2000-3000 protesters with
> 100-150 police officers. However, now they go for intimidation! The leader
> of the office for state safety of the Viennese police, Hofrat Zander, who
> is also responsible for the recent police riot (see evil:austria 0600),
> threatens activists with an enforcement of police forces and the
> announcement to take vigorous action. Meanwhile, publicly known activists
> receive one police file after the other.
>
> [2] On a visit to an expert of democracy
>
> In order to defend Austria's reputation with "teeth and claws" (Wolfgang
> Schuessel), Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Benita Ferrero-Waldner,
> with her Cheshire-like cat grin, tried another charming offensive. Highly
> esteemed people of the international public and especially the media
should
> be convinced to attest Austria's capability of democratic behavior.
Already
> some time ago the tour was carefully planned by a PR-agency. In London
> Ferrero-Waldner met an expert in democracy, the former prime minister
> Margret Thatcher, who described her buddy, the former Chilean dictator,
> Agusto Pinochet with the words: "He brought democracy to Chile." Austria
> can learn a lot from him!? Maybe he can suggest some possible actions
> against the annoying anti-governmental activists...Whether the European
> Union will be too pleased about this meeting with an EU opponent is a
> different question. But democracy needs sacrifices, especially from the
> opposition.
>
> [3] Herr Windholz' humble servants
>
> Not only the new chairman of the "Section Lower Austria" of the Austrian
> Freedom Party (FPOe), Ernest Windholz, has problems with a far-right range
> of ideas (he used the slogan "our honor means faith" of the "Waffen-SS" -
> armed corps of Hitler's SS - in his inaugural speech; for details see
> evil:austria 0600). Another high-ranking member of his section, Barbara
> Rosenkranz, is married to Horst-Jakob Rosenkranz who is the publisher of
> the far-right magazine "fakten" ("facts"). More of these interesting
> connections have been revealed by the weekly magazine "profil" in the
issue
> from June, 12: Before Bernhard Blochberger became a political
> representative, he was a candidate for the neo-fascistic corps (NDP) of
the
> late Norbert Burger. When NDP was banned in 1988, Blochberger took an
> interest in the "citizen referendum - A heart for the native" which is
well
> known for hostility against foreigners. He used to sign his "competent"
> articles with "German greetings". Already in his NDP times he probably met
> his friend Frank-Dieter Stanzel who even became "1. Bundesschriftwart" (an
> expression used for something like secretary during the National
> Socialism). At the end of April this year, when Stanzel was inaugurated in
> a local council, his past was made public once again. When he was asked
> whether he refrains from his NDP past, he simply answered: "I did not blow
> up or hang somebody - this was all legal." Today Blochberger and also
> Wolfgang Haberler are colleagues in the Lower Austrian provincial
> parliament. Earlier, they both wrote articles for "Der
> Voelkerfreund"("Friend of the Nations"), a periodical published by people
> who have been described as a "small group of the far-right" by the
> Documentation Centre of the Austrian Resistance (DOeW). Haberler is also
in
> the local council in a city in Lower Austria, and the FPOe local in this
> town distributed flyers in 1990 which stated: "Austria was German, is
> German, and will be German". In 1997, Alois Preiszler and Edwin Rambossek,
> two other members of FPOe, took part in the general meeting of the
> comradeship Prince Eugen, according to DOeW an "extremely right-wing
> veteran organization". In the sixties, Rainer Mauritz, now a financial
> expert of FPOe, was involved in attacks in South Tyrol and convicted to
> five and a half years in prison. In 1993, the police found swastika flags
> and other NS propaganda material in the house of his previous press
> officer. He was accused by an FPOe member of the local council who got
> expelled from the party for this accusation.
>
> [4] International connections of the FPOe (1)
>
> About 150 emissaries of Lega Nord made a trip in order to meet with the
> FPOe of Carinthia. According to Martin Strutz, the aim of the meeting was
> "the exchange of thoughts in political and organizational matters". Of
> course they talked a lot about the sanctions of European Community against
> Austria, which they both reject. The representatives of Lega Nord came
from
> Vicenza where Joerg Haider attended their election campaign in the fall of
> 1999. At this occasion, according to the magazine "Padania" published by
> Lega Nord, he yelled: "Viva la Padania".
>
> [5] International connections of the FPOe (2)
>
> In an interview the president of the German Office of Constitutional
> Security, Heinz Fromm, emphasized that the success of FPOe influences the
> politically right scene in Germany. Moreover, he states that there are
some
> connections between supporters of FPOe and German right-wing extremists.
>
> [6] Right-extremist speaks to FPOe academics
>
> Only now it became publically known that a German right-wing extremist,
> Horst Mahler, was invited by an FPOe-associated academic association to
> give a lecture in Vienna on Nov 23, 1999. The topic of his speech: "The
> betrayal of the German left by Adolf Hitler. The betrayal of Germany by
the
> left. Is there a future for the German nation/race?" During his speech he
> could not withhold his enthusiasm for A. Hitler: "Hitler took hold of and
> united the national and revolutionary powers of this nation."
>
> [7] FPOe and the past
>
> FPOe local in the village of Seekirchen announced the community will not
> participate in the NS forced labor fond. Instead, FPOe vice-mayor and
> representative of legislature, Helmut Naderer, demands compensation from
> the German federal government as well as the current governments of the
> former allies for those people whose relatives were carried off to Russia
> and the other victorious countries or lost their lives in the war. He (H.
> Naderer) argues that for Seekirchen "it is historically proven that the
> municipality never used forced laborers". Thus, "there is no reason to
> financially support this action". On the contrary, many people from
> Seekirchen were still detained in custody and used as forced laborers in
> Russia and the other victorious countries long after the war was over.
> "Many of them did not survive the inhuman conditions and died. Others
> returned home from the forced labor camps up to ten years later."
>
> [8] Ten-thousands of files about NS-robberies in Viennese archives
>
> Over decades secret files of the ill-famed central office for Jewish
> emigration and the department for expropriation have been stored in the
> bureau of financial affairs in Vienna. These files include transportation
> lists with the names of those Jewish citizens who were deported to
> extermination and disciplinary camps from Vienna. First estimations
suggest
> the existence of over 100.000 files that have been kept in storage without
> knowledge of the relatives of the deported and expropriated. The files not
> only contain information about the deportation of Jewish persons from
> Austria, but also about the assistance of banks in expropriation affairs.
> Moreover, they make it evident that Austrian authorities were well
informed
> about the extent of the expropriation already shortly after the war. First
> reaction of the president of the Israelitic community, Ariel Muzicant:
> "This is so outrageous that these facts alone should trigger complaints in
> the three-digit billion range." The Israelitic community will not file
> complaints, however they demand a full-scale enlightenment campaign about
> the Holocaust.
>
> shortened from: "Der Standard" June 30 and July 1
>
> [9] Opinion Poll of the month
>
> According to a public-opinion poll of INTEGRAL institute, 8% of Austrians
> believe that mass execution of Jewish people during the Third Reich is not
> historically proven. Most of them are elderly people or FPOe-voters.
> Another 10% did not answer this question.
>
> [10] FPOe as "block leader"
>
> While OeVP tries to improve their knowledge about democracy, FPOe looks
for
> cosmopolitanism. In the Viennese district Simmering, FPOe tries to give
> their best. A Turkish woman living in one of the council houses has been
> provoking her neighbors for a long time. Simply because her son did not
> want to share his gameboy with other kids, the racist mob had a reason to
> take actions against "foreign control". During repair works on her
balcony,
> some dirt fell on the balcony of the flat underneath and this was
> sufficient reason to alarm FPOe. Herr Anetsdorfer, a member of FPOe, wrote
> a letter reading: "We learned that you are unfortunately unable to observe
> the simple customary (!) conditions for the usage of your apartment.
> Therefore, we ask you to avoid such disturbances (!) in future and
> eventually you might want to increase your consideration of Central
> European (!) habits." The letter closed: "We do hope that we allowed you a
> glimpse into the world of thoughts of your neighbors, and we remain in the
> hope for an improvement of your manners." Herr Anetshofer's world of
> thoughts was recently revealed by the Viennese weekly city magazine
> "Falter". During a brainstorming for new FPOe-leaflets, he had flashes of
> inspiration like "Who exterminates nation and country? SPOe and
> asylum-seekers!" (in German, this rhymes!) A suggestion to arrange a
> discussion forum at a place frequented by Turkish people, he answered
> saying: "At the best, I am going to smash a grenade into that place." This
> is the voice of the nation!
>
> [11] About the freedom of the art
>
> According to his own statements the art director of the "Salzburg
> Festivals", Gerard Mortier, feels "watched like in a police state". "Since
> political statements might be rated as breach of contract" a lawyer now
> reviews all his letters that may be politically biased.
