Rodong Sinmun calls for great national unity

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- Nothing can breaker repress the Korean
people's desire and will to reunify the
country through unity of the whole nation, says Rodong Sinmun today in a
signed article.
Stressing that the nation's might is that of unity and its destiny is
decided by the unity, the article says:
The Korean people are a homogeneous nation strong in patriotism and
unity. They had lived for many years as one
nation, strengthening its identity.
In order to defend their national identity as a homogeneous nation and
independently carve out its destiny, the
Korean people should join the severed blood ties of the nation as one and
regain its identity as a homogenous one.
Strong driving force of the nation should be built up to reunify the
country. To this end, it is important to achieve
the great unity of the whole nation.
Great national unity should be achieved on the principle of national
independence. Only then, is it possible for the
Korean nation to become true master of its destiny and a great motive and
decisive force for the reunification and
prosperity of the country.
As the trend of the times can hardly be stemmed, nothing can break the
Korean nation's will for unity and
reunification.

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung's immortal work "On
the Three Principles of National
Reunification" was published in booklet by the Natun Bangla Publishing
House of Bangladesh on July 5.
This is his talk to South Korean representatives who came to Pyongyang

talks between the north and south on May 3, Juche 61 (1972).
In the talk he laid down the three principles--independence, peaceful
reunification and great national unity--to
provide a great program for reunification.
The booklet in its preface says that the issue of Korean reunification
should be solved not only in the interests of
the Korean people but for regional security and world peace.
Noting that the President set forth the three principles of national
reunification which serve as a cornerstone of
Korean reunification, the booklet says that these principles are
demonstrating their great vitality as the days go by for
their fair and aboveboard, reasonable and realistic nature.

Pothong gate

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- The Pothong gate standing on the bank of
the River Pothong flowing through the
central part of the capital city of Pyongyang is one of the historic relics
listed as national treasure.
The gate was erected as a western gate of Pyongyang in 586 when Koguryo
was building the walled city as its
capital.
It was repaired in 1406 when the wall was rebuilt and the present
structure was built in 1473. It underwent repairs
several times afterwards.
The gate is made up of the substructure and the two-storied pavilion
resting on it.
The substructure, 7.6 m in height, was laid with trimmed granite blocks
with arched gateway, 4.4 m in width and
4.55 m in height, in its middle part. The front of the gateway used to be
barred by a solid wooden gate reinforced with
rows of iron rivets.
The pavilion is a loft building with crane-shaped roof of double eaves.
As a gateway opening out to the northwest of the walled city of
Pyongyang, the Pothong gate was of great
importance throughout the periods of the Koguryo, Koryo and Li dynasties
because it occupied a vital situation both
from the standpoint of national defence and of day-to-day traffic.
In 1592 when the Imjin patriotic war was fought the Korean people and
soldiers dashed in through the gate and
dealt a crushing blow to the enemy troops, liberating the walled city.
Solid and elegant in its architectural style, the gate adds to the
scenic beauty of its surrounding areas. From olden
times the gate has been called a gate to send off guests and prized by the
people as one of the eight famous sights of
Pyongyang.
The ancient Pothong gate is in good shape thanks to the nation's policy
to preserve the cultural relics.

Rodong Sinmun on national independence

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries a signed
article stressing that what is important in
realising national reunification, the supreme task of the nation, is to
maintain the principle of national independence,
which is the core of settlement of the national issue.
There is no more urgent task of the Korean nation than to achieve
national independence, the article says, and goes
on:
National reunification is the issue of reuniting the bisected nation
and achieving nation-wide independence.
The principle of national independence constitutes the core of
settlement of the national issue because it is an idea
of independence reflecting the common demand and interests of the nation.
The north and south of Korea should carve out the destiny of the nation
independently. Independence is the only
way of the nation to live and achieve reunification.
The issue of reunification calls for maintaining independence in the
movement for reunification. The maintenance
of independence makes it possible to settle all the problems in the
movement for reunification in conformity with the
independent demand and basic interests of our nation and on its strength.
The Korean nation has the ability to resolve by itself the issue of
national reunification, an internal affair of the
nation.
Our nation, strong in patriotism and high in the spirit of
independence, has bravely fought in defence of the
independence of the country and the nation.
No one can break the will of our nation to reunify the country in an
independent and peaceful way and no force can
block the vigorous advance of our fellow countrymen toward national
reunification.

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- Papers here carry articles extending full
support and solidarity to the just cause of
the Cuban people on the occasion of the month of solidarity with the Cuban
people.
Rodong Sinmun says the month of solidarity will mark a significant
occasion in manifesting the Korean people's
firm support and solidarity with the just cause of the Cuban people and
further strengthening the militant and comradely
friendship and solidarity between the two peoples.
Today the Cuban people are steadfastly holding aloft the banner of
socialism, smashing every move of the
imperialists to isolate and stifle their country, the daily notes, and goes on:
The slogans "Motherland or death, we will win" and "Socialism or death,
we will win" clearly show how strong
the Cuban people's confidence and will are.
Cuban boy Elian's recent return to his motherland from his detention in
the United States is another brilliant
victory won by the Cuban people with a staunch will and spirit to fight for
justice to the last despite whatever
