Korea Slams U.S. NDM As "Sheer Lie," Attempt At Global Military Supremacy STOP NATO: NO PASARAN! - HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.COM http://www.russiatoday.com/news.php3?id=179781 North Korea Slams U.S. Missile Shield Plan Ahead of Russia President Visit By Sam Greene SEOUL, Jul 18, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) North Korea has stepped up its furious rhetoric against the United States' proposed missile defense shield ahead of Wednesday's historic visit to Pyongyang by Russian President Vladimir Putin. A commentary carried on Pyongyang's mouthpiece Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) Tuesday dismissed United States fears of an attack from North Korea as "a sheer lie." Washington views North Korea as a "rogue state" and cites the Stalinist country's nuclear arms program as a key reason for the planned Star Wars-style shield. But North Korea rejected claims it was a threat to US security Tuesday. "The United States claims that its New Missile Defense (NMD) is for protecting its security from a threat from the DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea). This, however is a sheer lie," KCNA monitored in Seoul said. US development of NMD was prompted by Washington's "aim to have military supremacy over the world," the agency said. The propaganda offensive comes just 24 hours before Putin arrives in Pyongyang for talks Wednesday, with the US shield program tipped to dominate discussions. Putin's visit to Russia's former Soviet allies comes ahead of the July 21-22 G8 Summit in Okinawa, and is the latest attempt by Moscow to boost its influence in the region. Observers here said Putin may be seeking to broker a weapons agreement with the North in an attempt to strengthen Moscow's arguments against the United States' development of the multi-billion dollar shield. On Monday, Putin said Washington could no longer use North Korea as a justification for developing an anti-missile shield. North Korea agreed to a moratorium on ballistic missile tests in September last year in return for a relaxing of US sanctions, he noted.
