Protest demonstration
Thursday, 10 August, Perugia
in front of the prison

Please support the following call (and send it before the beginning of the
demonstration):

***

Perugia, 7th August 2000

Freedom for Jaime Yovanovic Prieto

who has been arrested after the Anti-imperialist Camp in Assisi the 6th of
August 2000.

Facing the fact that:

in the cases of the Chilean citizens Patricio Ortiz and Claudio Molina,
who were arrested in Switzerland and Argentine through a warrant issued by
Interpol (demanded by the Chilean military justice), the Courts had to
reject their extradition and give them political asylum as they had to come
to the conclusion, that until today human rights are violated in Chile

in Chile there is still existing death penalty

the Chilean democracy is constantly undermined by the National Security
Council as a superior organ (composed by the commanders of the three arms of
the service, the President of the Republic, the President of the Supreme
Court and the President of the Senate), which has a veto in all political
affairs of the state

we, the signing organisations and persons of the following call, demand from
the Italian government, which has arrested the Chilean citizen Jaime
Yovanovic Prieto the 6th of August in Assisi and keeps him under arrest in
the prison of Perugia, his immediate liberation and political asylum.

Jaime Yovanovic Prieto, ex-activist of the Movement of the Revolutionary
Left (MIR) is accused to have participated in an action that caused the
death of General Carol Urzua, expert for Military Intelligence, the 29th of
August 1983.

It is necessary to point out that the accusation was issued under the
military dictatorship and until today there has not been a process.

For Italy the case of Jaime Yovanovic has international relevance, first
because Jaime Yovanovic owes his life to the intervention of the Pope and
the Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, who promoted his asylum under the protection
of the apostolic nuncio in Santiago in 1984, second because the Italian
government apparently has not learned nothing from the case of calan.

The Appeal Court now has four days to decide about the legality of the
arrest of Jaime Yovanovic. In the meantime we absolutely have to mobilize
all our support and we therefore call upon all the associations,
organisations and persons to join our campaign, our demonstrations and sit
in front of the Prison of Perugia facing his transfer to the Appeal Court
where he should be interrogated.

Let's unite the anti-imperialist forces against globalisation, for peace and
social justice!

Freedom for Jaime Yovanovic Prieto!

Freedom for all the political prisoners!
