Thursday, 24 August, 2000: Having proven their ability to secure the
release of Malaysians held captive by rebels in Jolo, Libyan negotiator
Rajab Azzarouq has now requested assistance from Malaysian emissaries. This
request was forwarded to Senator Datuk Sairin Karno who played a pivotal
role in securing the release of Malaysian hostages abducted from Pulau
Sipadan on April 23. "Azzarouq personally made the request just before we
left Zamboanga for Kota Kinabalu yesterday with the remaining Malaysians,"
Sairin said. However, Sairin said he was prepared to assist only if the
rebels preferred to deal with him and other Malaysian negotiators, and if
there was an official request by the Philippine Government. [Yahoo]
